When I wear my hair in the above style, the number one question I get from natural and relaxed women of all ethnicities is, “Why dont you always wear your hair like that?” – and I just think to myself, “If only you knew what I have to go through in order to get my hair like this!”
Now dont get me wrong, I love this style and its nice to get compliments; however many people believe that these particular curls are the result of my genetic background. In reality, they are the result of a series of two strand twists on stretched hair that are then spiral rolled on gray and pink permrods and set on wet hair to dry overnight. In a nut shell, this is not my natural hair curl pattern and I most certainly did not “wake up like this.” These medium sized wavy ringlets take time to create!
My natural curl pattern is extremely thick (the width of the strands as well as the amount per square inch aka density!), coily on the outer edges, and wavy in the middle. Shrinkage is something I understand but do not embrace. Ninety percent of the time I wear my hair stretched out in straight two strand twists without setting them on perm rods or taking them apart. This is my style of choice, as my long term strategy is to grow my locs to long lengths by avoiding knots, tangles, and breakage.
Now, I know there are hundreds of thousands of natural hair girls out there that live and die by the wash and go, but me on the other hand… I can’t “wash” and “go” anywhere. I have tried so many methods and products, including different gels, conditioners, and various types of brushes to achieve this style, and I always end up with a tangled mop of mess on my head. Maybe its due to the thickness, amount of hair I have, or the mixture of hair types that just become, as my best friend puts it, “angry w/ each other…” but whatever it is, I know from experience that my hair must be stretched in some way 100% of the time.
My personal method of hair maintenance is perfectly fine with me, but I know there are women out there that disagree with my strategies. What are your thoughts?
